V&S III: If a girl wants to be a legend

Updated: Oct 25, 2020

For our final project for the Video and Sound course we had to re-interpret a classic fairy or folk tale or well-known story in one of three formats given. Me and my project partner Lauren Chong chose re-interpretation in the format of a “viral” video campaign that we will film, edit and post on a social media platform.

The overview of our idea:

Our idea is to take the fairy tale stories of Ariel and Mulan to compare and contrast the two. Our video campaign will take place over Instagram with a few posts of our videos since Instagram has a time limit to its content. Ariel and Mulan are both powerful women figures in their respective fairy tale stories. Therefore, we wanted to highlight how revolutionary the princesses are with our video campaign. We decided that we would cover 6 topics in an interview style of the two princesses and record their responses to these questions. As they answer, pictures and clips of other powerful and influential women in the world will be displayed to show that their experiences can be related to all women. Our topics include, growing a family vs athletics/physical strength, being a strong leader vs being a great team player, and science oriented vs media and arts centered. Overall our viral video campaign will highlight women empowerment through the two fairy tales and their princess’ stories.

Below you can see the moodboard-poster that illustrates our idea with a quote from Calamity Jane who was an American frontierswoman. The green lines form the word "if", which is put inside the quote. There are 6 themes which oppose each other in one way or another, but they still can and do involve females. On the left side there are two fairytale characters: Mulan and Ariel. They have a lot in common, for example, courage, kindness, adventurousness, and determination. But their stories and motivations are what distinguish them from one another which we aim to show in the video.
