VI: Design Systems

Updated: Mar 17, 2021

This week we were asked to prepare sketches for the assignment that will last for around 4 weeks. That's scary. I haven't done an assignment that would require me to work on it for almost a month for a very long time. Let's hope I have patience to finish it, huh. For some reason sketching on paper was really hard, I just couldn't make myself to start it. Probable because I know I'm bad at sketching, so it'd be easier for me to start working in the software instead. But I guess there's a point in working on paper, I definitely went out of my comfort zone. Also I started working with the poster first and it discouraged me from continuing sketching. In my experience, poster is something beautiful and eye-catching, and it shouldn't include a lot of information. But here we have to include itinerary with times, names and titles of the presentations...I doubt that anyone's eye would actually be caught by this amount of text. Unless they are really bored in the subway and don't have a phone or a book with them. So I felt overwhelmed in a sense that I wanted to create something beautiful, but as a result it's gonna look like a brochure. It's just working with typography all over again. And only typography. There's no space to put a clever photoshopped picture there. Landing page felt like a blessing after this poster aka brochure task. And the spreads felt just unusual for me to do, as I've never done them. And again, it was hard on paper, so I hope it will be much easier in the software.

As for the design itself, I want to incorporate nature feel, wood colors because it's gonna be a symposium in Spring on a quite serious topic. I believe that after the pandemic we need to make anything serious look hopeful or fun. Otherwise, what's the point in surviving this Covid-19 stuff. So the color palette would be brown-green-mustard for now (but we will see). Not sure on the fonts yet.
